HOLY ROSARY CHURCH
FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST COMMUNION FRAMEWORK
These two years are special times in preparing to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Families will be required to attend parent meetings and family retreats throughout the two years of our program. In addition, families are encouraged to attend Mass every Sunday, be introduced to and participate in Catholic practices regularly (such as developing a daily habit of prayer, reading the Bible, joining a ministry of our faith community and recognizing God in everyday life.)
We will learn to believe, celebrate, and live our Catholic faith.
The following outline will be used during our weekly Sunday Faith formation classes designated as Year One and Year Two of our First Communion Program.
Year One:
FOCUS QUESTION: What do we believe?
LESSON #1: We hear the Creation story. We will get to know ourselves and one another as creations of God.
LESSON #2: Our church is a people of God. We work and play with one another.
LESSON #3: We care for creation and find God in everyday life.
FOCUS QUESTION: Why did God make us?
LESSON #1: We are created in the image and likeness of God to serve Him.
LESSON #2: God tells us how to live. The ten commandments help us obey God and tell us how to treat one another and bring holiness into our everyday lives.
LESSON #3: The Saints are our models for how we should live.
FOCUS QUESTION: Who Is God?
LESSON #1: Getting to know God through His Word, the Bible. We listen to Bible stories about God. We learn about the New and Old Testament.
LESSON #2: We pray to God daily and learn that God is our Heavenly Father. We learn and remember our prayers and how to pray.
LESSON #3: We praise God and attend Mass. Sunday is the Lord's day.
FOCUS QUESTION: Who Is Jesus Christ?
LESSON #1: Jesus is God's Son. We listen to Bible stories about Jesus and his time on earth.
Jesus performed miracles on earth.
LESSON #2: Jesus chose the apostles, his disciples, to help lead his church. Our religious education classes help us learn to become disciples of Jesus.
LESSON #3: Joseph is the father of Jesus while Jesus was on earth. Mary and Joseph journeyed to Bethlehem. The story of the birth of Jesus is called the Nativity.
FOCUS QUESTION: Who is the Holy Spirit?
LESSON #1: The Holy Spirit comes to us at Baptism.
LESSON #2: The Holy Spirit gives us gifts through other Sacraments as well.
LESSON #3: Together the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are the Holy Trinity. LESSON #4: Jesus lives with his father and the Holy Spirit in Heaven.
FOCUS QUESTION: How can Mary help our Church?
LESSON #1: Mary is the Mother of Jesus and our Heavenly Mother too.
LESSON #2: An angel told Mary about the Annunciation and Mary said YES.
LESSON #3: We ask Mary to pray for us to help us get closer to God.
LESSON #4: What does it mean to be part of a Marianist family?
FOCUS QUESTION: Why do we go to Church?
LESSON #1: The church is a sacred place where our Faith community gathers to give thanks and praise to God.
LESSON #2: When we tour the church, we will see and learn about the special objects and places in our church.
LESSON #3: There are special times throughout the church calendar/liturgical calendar and special days that we celebrate together as a church community.
FOCUS QUESTION: How do we live what we believe?
LESSON #1: We live out our Faith by demonstrating our Catholic practices. What are some Catholic practices and beliefs?
LESSON #2: Caring for Creation including ourselves and finding God in everyday life.
LESSON #3: We treat others with respect by being fair and forgiving. We see one another as equals. We learn to be generous and loving. We help the poor and the sick.
LESSON #4: We make good choices by learning when to say "Yes" and when to say "No." We ask for forgiveness when we make a poor choice. We learn about Penance and Reconciliation.
FOCUS QUESTION: What can we do to grow closer to God?
LESSON #1: Prayer makes our hearts strong. Reading our Bible helps us learn more about God.
LESSON #2: We remember the promise that we made at Baptism. We prepare to receive our First Holy Communion next year.
LESSON #3: We make God the center of our life by praying to Him with our family and living a life of Faith and gratitude.
